Kentucky & Indiana SIXENSE Awarded 35-Year Ohio River Bridge Monitoring Project

The « Ohio River East End Crossing » project is one of the USA’s largest transport infrastructure projects. This PPP project has been designed, built and operated by WVB East End Partners. It will considerably improve transportation between Kentucky and Indiana thanks to the construction of a set of structures mainly made up of a 762-meter-long cable-stayed bridge over the Ohio River and a twin-tube tunnel at the Kentucky side of the bridge.

Having successfully monitored the construction of the Kentucky side of the bridge, SIXENSE is now in charge of monitoring the new bridge throughout the entire duration of the concession!

This new contract over the long term indicates the client’s recognition for the quality of the geotechnical and structural monitoring services provided by SIXENSE over the past two years whilst the tunnel was being built. This 512-meter-tunnel was built through geologically challenging ground and underneath the US 42 highway, passing under the historic Drumanard Estate.

This complex environment needed an intense monitoring programme for anticipating and controlling any impact from explosive excavation work on the surrounding areas. A wireless network combining 3G and radio signals was used to ensure that all sensors were properly connected, whether inside the tunnel or above ground surface.

Since December 2016, this brand-new bridge has been equipped with the SIXENSE monitoring system comprised of more than 80 sensors measuring cable tension and tower movement.

This system will be used throughout the entire time that WVB East End Partners is operating and maintaining the bridge, which is currently expected to be for the next 35 years.
